Richard Garceau ’14: Ethical and accountable
Richard Garceau started a full-time position in June with the EMC Corporation, but his interest in working for the company began during a 2013 summer internship. “The environment at EMC is very similar to that of Bryant,” he says. “Everyone is hard-working and focused on success, but members of the community respect one another and enjoy themselves while achieving this success.”
The interview process was intense, says Garceau, but he felt confident and well prepared. “EMC does not seek 4.0 students with perfect résumés – they look for highly ethical and accountable individuals with exceptional character,” he says. “During the interview, they asked me questions about team projects and campus involvement to get a clearer picture of my time management skills, my character, and my leadership potential.”
The marketing major had taken part in a number of co-curricular activities, but his ability to lead and promote change became evident through his work on the Bryant Senior Advisory Council, as an event coordinator for a MGT200 service learning project, and as a project manager for Bryant Enactus, where he helped to design a career services workshop for unemployed veterans.
Garceau competed in the venerable 2014 National Collegiate Sales Competition, the largest and oldest sales competition in the United States that now includes international schools. The Bryant team was seeded to place 46 th among 67 undergraduate schools that boasted large and well-established selling programs. They surpassed 37 competitors, placing ninth as a team. After the event in Kennesaw, GA, Garceau was contacted by 10 companies about job offers and possible opportunities.
“It’s so important to get involved and be part of Bryant’s amazing atmosphere, where there are just as many opportunities and benefits out of the classroom as there are in the classroom,” he says.
